DISAPPOINTED coach Tony Smith aims to re-ignite the Giants' Super League play-off bid by erradicating the errors which led to their last-gasp defeat at St Helens.

Paul Wellens' try two minutes from time in front of 9,288 at Knowsley Road last night dashed Huddersfield's hopes of taking a third successive big scalp after their previous wins over Wigan and league leaders Leeds.

The Giants were 14-0 up at the break with the help of two tries by in-form Australian Brandon Costin, who has now notched in six successive matches and who has 16 touchdowns this season.

But their failure to build on that advantage means they remain 10th in the table, still three points adrift of play-off rivals London, who they take on at Griffin Park on Tuesday.

While London went down 28-12 to Wigan last night - they have still to win at home this season - the Giants paid the price for second-half errors.

"We're not pleased with the way we performed after the break," said Smith.

"In terms of determination and guts, we were great all game, but we made too many mistakes in our own half in the second half.

"We had built a pretty good platform for ourselves, so to lose the game is a blow.

"You don't mind losing when you've played well, but we only played well for part of the game.

"Now we have to raise ourselves for London."

Smith was today checking on forwards Jamie Bloem, who injured his groin during the warm-up and took no part last night (Jon Grayshon came in) and Jarrod O'Doherty, who took a knock to the sternum early on.
