COCK-A-HOOP Huddersfield Giants today announced a groundbreaking sponsorship deal with the University of Huddersfield.

In a break with the traditional club sponsorship financial package, the town's university will work in partnership with the Super League club for the benefit of both parties.

Full details of the major deal were revealed at the university this afternoon when new signings Brad Drew and Chris Thorman unveiled the new Giants playing strip for 2005.

A key addition will be the University of Huddersfield logo on the front of the home shirt, although last season's principal sponsor Microworld will also feature prominently after agreeing a new one-year cash sponsorship deal at the end of Super League IX.

"What has been announced today is a very exciting and groundbreaking partnership," said Giants general manager Richard Thewlis.

"We have entered into this arrangement because we believe we will both benefit significantly.

"The University boasts some state-of-the-art sports facilities and equipment, and we will be able to tap into that.

"But at the same time it will also be about what we can do for them.

"There is no doubt this is another exciting development for the Giants.

"We are always looking at ways of moving this club forward, and we believe this partnership is an excellent way of doing just that."

Today's launch was the first official function attended by new Giants hooker Drew, who flew in from his native Australia yesterday.

It is the first time he has visited the country since starring for Penrith Panthers in their wins against Bradford, St Helens and Warrington in the 1997 World Club Championship and the 29-year-old can't wait!

"I've been waiting for this moment from the day I decided to sign several months ago," said Drew, who will be joined in Huddersfield by wife Justine and sons Harry (five) and Jed (15 months) on December 6.

"Everything I heard about the Giants when I was back in Australia was positive and my initial impressions now I'm here back that up."
