HUDDERSFIELD Giants’ hooker Conner Spencer suffered defeat on international duty as England Under 16s were beaten 29-14 in France.

In the clash at Entraigues the Hunslet Warriors forward, whose scholarship club is the Giants, was part of an England side who staged a late second-half fightback but still could not overcome the home team.

It was another setback for England who had lost the opening clash at Carpentras 19-16 and coach Dave Elliott said: “We are all very disappointed with the first half performance.

“But I felt that we showed a lot of character and honesty in the second half.

“It has been a huge learning curve for the players, but I am sure that it will help them in their careers.”

In the Valvoline Academy League, the Giants Under 18s were beaten 42-6 at Harlequins with their points coming from a try from winger Darren Lamb and a goal from stand off Danny Ansell.

Giants: Whitton; Lamb, Fletcher, Eddison, Bridge; Ansell, Sheldon; Benn, Radcliffe, Keane, Farnsworth, Haywood, Fox. Subs: O’Toole, Cummings, Sandiland, Peltier.

The Giants Under 16s side will be in action on Saturday when they take on Sheffield Eagles at YMCA (1.15).
