BIG Jonathan Grayshon is in the frame to make his first Super League X start of the season for the Giants!

The 21-year-old back-rower has been named in Huddersfield's 18-man squad for tonight's trip to St Helens (8.00).

Head coach Jon Sharp will wait until an hour before kick-off before revealing his final 17, with the crucial call being whether to have an extra forward or back on the bench.

That could depend on the heaviness of the Knowsley Road pitch.

St Helens has escaped the major snowfalls and club officials, this morning, saw no reason why the game shouldn't take place.

But the playing field is expected to be heavy under foot - it was a mudbath when the Saints beat Widnes 40-18 in their opening home game a fortnight ago - and that could force the selection issue.

Grayshon, who made 13 Super League appearances last season and scored one try, is in the 18 at the expense of Mick Slicker and Marcus St Hilaire.

The exerienced duo were named in Sharp's initial 20-man squad, with prop Slicker hoping to make a first start in 2005 and winger St Hilaire looking to return after missing last week's 36-28 defeat to Hull with a calf injury.

St Helens have been handed a major boost with the return of Great Britain full-back Paul Wellens.

The Saints No1 is back after being taken ill on the team bus over to Leeds Rhinos last Friday.

Ian Hardman misses out as a result.

Scrum-half Sean Long has recovered from an ankle knock sustained during his side's 30-18 defeat at the new world club champions.

That means the Saints will be aiming to bounce back to winning ways against the Giants tonight - something they did on numerous occasions last season.

Although Huddersfield enjoyed their most successful season in top-flight British rugby league for 40 years in 2004, the results against St Helens were some of the lower moments.

Apart from crashing out 46-6 to St Helens in the semi-final of the Powergen Challenge Cup, the Giants also suffered away defeats at Knowsley Road by 50-8 and 48-12 and a heavy 50-10 home reverse. All three came after the Saints had been beaten the week before.

Those heavy defeats clearly make Saints the Giants' bogey side, with coach Ian Millward determined to see that process continue in 2005.

And one look at his thinking behind tonight's changes reflect that fact.

Although Hardman performed admirably at full back in Wellens' absence, there was a general shakiness in the way the team dealt with kicks.

Four of Leeds' five tries came either directly or indirectly from the boot.

That prompted Millward to say: "Leeds' first try was just a good kick and chase and they had us under pressure.

"The last one the kid (Hardman) should have caught it on the full.

"It was just a little bit of inexperience with his positional play, but he is only young.

"He will learn from that and put himself in the right position in future.

"We will have to be good under the kicks on Friday, because Huddersfield are a team that kicks a lot. They are a very workmanlike side and they always give us a tough game.

"This is a tough league. You can't turn up to any game and expect to win."

The Saints supremo has already gained considerable first-hand knowledge of the Giants' style.

He was at Hilton Park as Huddersfield opened their season with an excellent 30-12 triumph against the newly- promoted Leigh Centurions.

Then last week he was in the Galpharm Stadium stands as the Giants lost 36-28 at home to Hull.

How much Millward will have gained from that match remains to be seen.
