Halifax RLFC coach Karl Harrison saw his side move closer to securing third spot after dismantling local rivals Keighley 34-4.

A brace of tries each for Steve Tyrer, Wayne Reittie and Ryan Fieldhouse helped Fax stroll to victory – Tyrer scoring as he added five goals.

Following Leigh’s 24-18 defeat against Batley, Halifax now need only avoid defeat against Workington Town to secure third place.

After a string of disappointing results and unconvincing performances, Karl Harrison’s side was vastly improved as they outclassed the Cougars from the outset.

Dominic Brambani brought the curtain down on the Don Valley Stadium in record-breaking fashion as Sheffield Eagles consolidated their position at the top of the Kingstone Press Championship with a 36-26 win over Hunslet.

Brambani, who last Sunday broke the Sheffield club record for points in a season held by coach Mark Aston, kicked four goals to take his total for the year to 149 and smash Aston’s goalkicking record which had stood since 1989.

Sheffield’s victory, in the final league game to be played at Don Valley before the stadium is pulled down, keeps them three points in front of Featherstone with two games left to play.

The Hawks had led 12-0 thanks to early tries from Lee Mapals and Andrew Yates, both converted by David March, but Menzie Yere’s 40th try of the season, which took him above Wigan winger Josh Charnley in the list of leading scorers, got the home side back in the game.

The Eagles then struck twice in quick succession just before half-time through Michael Knowles and James Davey to edge 16-12 ahead and, although the visitors battled to the end, winger Vinny Finnigan’s second try seven minutes from the end dashed their hopes.

Mapals completed his hat-trick just before the end to earn his side a crucial bonus point in their battle to avoid relegation.

Scrum-half Liam Finn kicked eight goals to reach 2,000 career points in Featherstone’s 52-4 rout of Whitehaven.

Centre Vince Mellars, who is on loan from Wakefield, and winger Will Sharp both scored hat-tricks as Rovers maintained the pressure on Sheffield, who have to visit the Big Fellas Stadium on Wednesday.

Greg Worthington and Jack Bussey scored Featherstone’s other tries while Chris Fleming scored a consolation effort for the visitors.

Championship results:@ Batley 24 Leigh 18, Dewsbury 24 Doncaster 10, Featherstone 52 Whitehaven 4, Keighley 4 Halifax 34, Sheffield 36 Hunslet 26, Swinton 22 Barrow 0, Workington 22 York 18

Greg Worthington and Jack Bussey scored Featherstone’s other tries while Chris Fleming scored a consolation effort for the visitors.

Australian scrum-half Ben Black scored his 100th try in the British game to help Batley to a thrilling 24-18 win over Leigh.

An early try from full-back Miles Greenwood put the Bulldogs in front but the in-form Centurions scored through Matt Gardner and Ryan Brierley to lead 12-6 at half-time.

Black then brought up his century and Jonny Campbell touched down to restore the Bulldogs’ lead but Leigh drew level with Jonathan Pownall’s 77th-minute try and it needed a last-minute score from hooker Paul Mennel to clinch it for John Kear’s men.

Dewsbury clinched a play-off spot by condemning Doncaster to a first defeat in seven matches.

Tries from Brad Watkinson, French international Kane Bentley and Tommy Gallagher put the Rams 18-4 up at half-time and James Craven added a fourth nine minutes into the second half to clinch a 24-10 victory.

Danny Cowling and Dennis Tuffour scored tries for Doncaster, who slip to eighth after failing to pick up a bonus point.

York are four adrift at the foot of the table after going down 22-18 at Workington.

Town led 16-6 at half-time thanks to two tries from Declan Hulme and one from Callum Phillips but York struck back after the break through Sam Latus and Sam Scott, with Tommy Carr’s 56th-minute penalty putting the visitors in front.

However, their survival hopes were dealt a major blow when Jason Mossop went over for Workington’s winning try 10 minutes from the end.

Swinton climbed out of the relegation zone thanks to a 22-0 win over Barrow, who are now next to bottom.

It was a scoreless half at Leigh Sports Village but second-half tries from Craig Harvey, Rhys Williams, Kevin Penny and James Mendeika saw the Lions home.

Centre Mick Nanyn kicked three goals to close within a point of Kel Coslett in seventh place in the all-time list of scorers.
