HUDDERSFIELD Giants' Junior Academy side rose to the occasion on the McAlpine Stadium stage to secure a convincing 50-16 win over Featherstone Rovers.

The match was played as a curtain-raiser to the Giants versus Leeds Super League clash, with the skill on show from the home youngsters laying a great foundation for the game which followed.

The Giants led from start to finish, and there was a hat trick of tries apiece for Thomas Hemingway and Philip Joseph.

Hemingway also landed five conversions to finish with an individual points tally of 22.

The opening goal for the England junior international, who was making his return after a two-week absence through tonsilitis, came after five minutes as he added the extras to Glen Holdsworth's touchdown.

Four minutes after that Hemingway's kick was collected by Ben Feehan, who raced over, and in the 13th minute, Joseph plunged through to make it 16-0.

Featherstone eventually got their act together to score their opening try after 19 minutes through Andy Kay, converted by Rob Allen, but by half-time it was 26-6 to the Giants.

Hemingway followed up Lee Simpson's break to race in after 24 minutes then Joseph crashed over from close range five minutes later.

Huddersfield lost some momentum with the 34th-minute sin-binning of Feehan for dissent and by the 51st minute, Rovers had cut the deficit to 26-16 with tries from Daniel Grimshaw and Rob Atkins and a Craig Moss goal.

The remainder of the game, however, belonged exclusively to the Giants.

A superb Paul Mennell break set Hemingway on his was to his second try in the 55th minute, before the home side crossed four times late on.

Hemingway and Joseph completed their hat tricks, Holdsworth charged through a massive gap for his second and in the final moments Richard Knight and Symon Sutherland combined to send Gareth Hull racing in for a well-worked touchdown.

It was an excellent finish to an excellent performance.
