HUDDERSFIELD Giants became the first team this season to take a League point off Leigh after sharing in a 22-22 Senior Academy First Division draw at Laund Hill last night.

It was a match that could have gone either way, with both teams having the chance to snatch victory in the closing stages.

But in the opening half it was the Giants who proved the dominant force.

Within four minutes they had opened the scoring as Paul White finished off an excellent move involving Danny Thomas and Neil Hutchinson.

White failed to convert and was also off target in the 18th minute after he had grabbed his second try in the corner.

Leigh hit back with a Darren Woods try and Mike Govin goal to make it 8-6.

But five minutes before the break White raced 80m before feeding Thomas to score a try, which White converted to give the home side an eight-point interval advantage.

By the hour mark, however, the visitors had built up a 20-14 lead.

In the 49th minute experienced Radney Bowker, who started the season playing Super League with London Broncos, raced over for a converted score and Mark Leigh quickly followed up to give his side the initiative.

But in a late see-saw battle Peter Robinson plunged over for a try and the sides exchanged penalties - Tony Williams landed the Giants goal - to tie up the score.

Attentions now turn to the Junior Academy First Division top-of-the-table clash between the Giants and Warrington Wolves at Wilderspool tomorrow (2.30).

Leaders Warrington have won all eight of their games, while coach Chris Plume's Giants have lost just once during the same period.

The Giants are boosted by the appearance of goalkicking stand-off Thomas Hemingway, who has spent the majority of the season with the Senior Academy.
