HUDDERSFIELD Giants coach Nathan Brown watched his players reach the quarter-finals of the Carnegie Challenge Cup and declared: "We must do better!"

Huddersfield were made to battle all the way to secure their 30-16 home triumph over fellow Super League side Catalan Dragons.

They will now take their place in the last-eight draw which is being screened live tonight on BBC Look North.

Whoever the Giants get, it will be tough, with seven of Super League’s current top eight in the hat. The other team is Hull KR, who are ninth!

And Brown knows if his side don’t polish up their act, they will struggle to make any further progress in the competition.

"The main thing is we’re in the hat for the next round," said a disappointed Brown.

"But Catalan didn’t play all that well either, yet we seemed to hang in there a bit better and that’s probably what got us the win.

"We had some players who were pretty poor. They know who they are and that they’ll have to do better.

"You can’t carry players through games in this day and age, whether it’s Super League or knockout.

"The next round’s quite a way off so we’ll worry about that later down the line.

"But we know we’re going to need to do a lot better, full stop."

Brown was, however, full of praise for the work of prop trio Eorl Crabtree, Darrell Griffin and Keith Mason.

"They were outstanding."
