DISAPPOINTED Giants captain Kevin Brown believes the last-minute call-off of Saturday’s clash against St Helens at Widnes will make everyone even hungrier for the re-scheduled game tonight (7.30).

The weekend’s planned meeting between the Super League rivals was postponed on the morning of the match due to a frozen Stobart Stadium pitch.

The contest has been hastily re-arranged at the same venue for tonight, with both coaches keen to give their first-choice squads a final run-out before the start of Super league XVI.

The season kicks-off on Saturday, February 12, with the Giants in action against Warrington in the opening Magic Weekend fixture at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, when Saints will be up against Wigan.

And new Giants skipper Brown knows how important it is for Huddersfield to get another game under their belt before the competition gets under way for real.

“After such an encouraging performance against Hull KR the other week, we were really looking forward to testing ourselves out against Saints on Saturday,” said the 26-year-old England stand-off, who led the Giants to an 18-10 triumph over Rovers in Eorl Crabtree’s testimonial clash at the Galpharm 15 days ago.

“So it was disappointing when we first heard Saturday’s game had been called off.

“But the good thing is that’s it’s been quickly re-arranged for tonight, which means we haven’t had too long to dwell on things. This postponement has been nothing too major.

“To be honest, I think what hit us the hardest about not playing the other day was that we didn’t find out until fairly late in the morning.

“In fact, I’d already set off when I was told.

“That meant we had a lot of energy in us, and I think most of us chose to go an do a weight session instead.

“I took myself off with Lee Gilmour and Scott Grix.

“Obviously, it’s not the same as playing a game, but hopefully we’ll all have benefited from the extra session on Saturday and will take that into tonight’s game.

“I’m sure that after the disappointment of Saturday, everyone will be looking forward to playing even more now.”

The plan for both clubs will be to field the same squads that had been pencilled in for Saturday.

Prices for tonight are £15 for adults, £10 concessions and £5 juniors. Family tickets at £30 (two adults and two children) are available from St Helens’ office at Widnes.
