KEN DAVY is confident the Giants will continue to build towards being the premier club in English rugby league.

Huddersfield open their Super League XV season with a big West Yorkshire derby against Bradford at the Galpharm tonight (8.00).

The Giants embark on the new campaign after finishing a club record third in Super League last season and having reached the Challenge Cup final at Wembley.

And ambitious chairman Davy believes his club is on course to maintain that impressive climb in 2010 on the back of a solid looking recruitment drive and strong pre-season.

“The season is about to begin with a fantastic opening game against Bradford, and we feel ready and excited about it,” said Davy, who is expecting a five-figure crowd for the eagerly-anticipated clash.

“Last season was tremendous. It was our most successful for 50 years, and there’s an incredible feelgood factor around the club.”

“The challenge now, of course, is for us to continue to build on what we have achieved.

“That’s not going to be easy, given the way every club has been building for the new season.

“But with the quality of signings we’ve made, the way everyone has worked in pre-season training and the way the side played in last week’s trial game at Castleford, we’re confident we can maintain the excellent progress we’ve shown over several years.

“Having said that, we have to keep our feet firmly on the ground and make sure we carry on working hard to ensure we become the premier club in English rugby league. That’s our ultimate goal.”

And Davy admits the fans have an important part to play in that role.

“We’re expecting another big crowd tonight – over 10,000 – and that will help to create a magic atmosphere,” he added. “There’s no doubt the backing of the fans is crucial to any future success.”
