NATHAN BROWN had admitted the Giants must show a massive improvement if they are to progress through to the quarter-final of the Carnegie Challenge Cup.

Huddersfield’s reward for their far from convincing 28-18 victory at Co-operative Championship Batley Bulldogs is a home clash against Super League rivals Catalan Dragons on the weekend of May 21 and 22.

It’s only nine day since the Giants suffered an agonising 13-12 defeat to the Dragons in Perpignan when Brown’s men lost top spot in the Super League XVI table as a result.

But the Galpharm chief knows their interest in this years’s Cup competition and the chance to move a step closer to a Wembley final could end at the fifth-round stage if they don’t start getting their act together.

“Our biggest problem against Catalan the other week was that we created plenty of opportunities but failed to take them,” said Brown. “That was something we were looking to fix up against Batley yesterday.

“But clearly that didn’t work. We were again guilty of making exactly the same mistakes, and we so nearly paid the price for doing that.

“In that respect, the opposition deserve a lot of credit, I thought they were tremendous. But I made it clear to our players at the end of the game what I thought about their performance and that we need to start improving very quickly.

“We obviously know a fair bit about Catalan and we know what a good side they are, but we also know that if we don’t get back to playing to our best then they could beat us again.”
