Proud Paul Anderson is hoping last night’s historic occasion is a taste of things to come for Huddersfield Giants.

For the first time in 81 years Huddersfield have finished at the top

of British rugby league as they beat Wakefield 40-0 to claim the Super League Leaders Shield.

Finishing minor champions was achieved with a week of the regular season to spare.

And while head coach Anderson was allowing his players to enjoy being crowned minor champions, he is already setting his sights on Saturday’s trip to Bradford Bulls and preparing his side for a run which he hopes will finish at Old Trafford for the Super League Grand Final on October 5.

“Last night was very special, and I want the players to savour the moment,” said Anderson.

“There aren’t many clubs who have lifted the League Leaders Shield during the Super League era, but they can now add the name of Huddersfield Giants to that list. That’s something that makes us all very proud.

“But while we know how much finishing top means, we know it’s far from the end of our season.

“Like everyone else at the club, I’ll enjoy this moment, but I won’t be 100% happy unless I’ve got champagne on my suit and we’re lifting the Super League trophy on October 5.

“That’s our ultimate goal, and winning the Shield is part of the journey towards trying to win the trophy.

“The boys should all be proud of what they’ve achieved, but they know our season is far from over.”

Anderson was particularly pleased for chairman Ken Davy, who has finally led his club to a major piece of silverware after 17 years at the helm.

“I’m absolutely delighted we’ve been able to do this for Ken and his wife, Jennifer,” added Anderson, who revealed in-form back-row forward Dale Ferguson missed last night’s game after picking up a knock in training.

“Over the years, Ken has put more money into the club than most of us could ever have imagined, so I know how special last night was to him.

He deserved this moment more than anyone.

“It’s fantastic we’ve been able to repay him by collecting this Shield. I hope he sleeps with it under his pillow!
