DAVID HODGSON is on the verge of making Giants’ Super League history.

The 28-year-old winger raced in for his 19th try of the season during Sunday’s thrilling 32-18 triumph over Hull FC.

And in the process he equalled Brandon Costin’s record number of tries scored by a Huddersfield player in a Super League season, which the Australian set in 2003.

Hodgson could obviously break that record in tomorrow’s home clash against Hull KR at the Galpharm Stadium.

But the man himself is more concerned about winning the match than breaking any records.

“It’s obviously a great feeling to score, and as a winger that’s one of your main jobs,” said Hodgson, who did finish last season with 21 tries, but three of those were scored in the Challenge Cup.

“And it goes without saying I’m delighted to be scoring on a regular basis.

“It’s a nice sight to see my name at the top of the tryscoring charts, and it’s also good to know I’m close to setting a new Giants record for tries scored in a Super League season.

“But the reason I score the tries is to try and help us win the games, and if we’re not winning the games those tries count for very little.

“It still remains the case that winning the games is the top priority and scoring the tries is a bonus.”

Hodgson is currently one try clear in the Super League scoring charts from Pat Richards (Wigan)Šand Chris Riley (Warrington).

But also hot on his heels with 16 is Giants teammate Leroy Cudjoe, who also has the best run of tryscoring in Super League, with six tries in the last five games.

And Hodgson is also delighted about that.

“Leroy is playing really well and deserves to be right up there,” added Hodgson.

“But the fact he’s a rival of mine in the race to finish as a top tryscorer means absolutely nothing at all.

“As I’ve said before, there isn’t much competition between us as to who finishes top because we just want to win games and everyone is at their happiest when we do that.

“We don’t set any targets for the number of tries we score in a season, although we do know the more we score, the more chance we have of winning games.

Cudjoe is obviously also poised to beat Costin’s mark of 19 for the year, with nine games of the regular season still to be played.

Both men do, however, have little chance of overhauling the record for the number of tries scored in a season, held by Bradford ace Lesley Vainikolo who finished with 36 in 2004.

But with a tally of 25 guaranteeing a place in the all-time Super League tries in a season top 10, that total could be well within their grasp.

The current leading tryscorers in Super League (League matches only) are: David Hodgson (Huddersfield) 19, Pat Richards (Wigan)Š18, Chris Riley (Warrington)Š18, Darrell Goulding (Wigan) 17, Leroy Cudjoe (Huddersfield) 16, Francis Meli (St Helens)Š14, Kyle Eastmond (St Helens)Š13, Danny McGuire (Leeds)Š13, Chris Hicks (Warrington) 13, Amos Roberts (Wigan)Š13.
