HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS are about to embark on the ultimate character-building exercise.

Head coach Paul Anderson’s Super League squad are setting off for the North Yorkshire Moors for a three-day army training camp with the 5th Regiment Royal Artillery Yorkshire Gunners on Monday.

During their time away, the Giants will camp out in bunks and take part in a number of army exercises, which Anderson knows will test his players’ character to the full – and help make them better rugby league players at the same time.

“This will certainly take the players out of their comfort zone,” said Anderson, who will be joining his squad and all of his coaching staff for the challenging army assignment.

“We can all forget about our nice king-size beds and big pillows while we’re up there. Our trip away will be a million miles away from things like that. This is all about coping with adversity and seeing how the players deal with it.

“The challenges they will be facing are obviously different to the challenges they face as professional rugby league players, but what they will be doing should still prove invaluable.

“Over these three days away we expect to learn a great deal more about the strength of character our players possess.

“We want to see how each player handles adversity. We want to see whether they’ll put their head down and sulk, or whether they’ll keep their heads up and focus on what they need to do.

“That’s what we look for on a game day, and that’s what we’ll be looking out for when we’re stuck on the North Yorkshire Moors.”
