Stand-in Huddersfield Giants coach Andy Kelly is braced for a major half-back selection dilemma.

With inspirational former Super League Man of Steel Danny Brough available for Friday’s trip to Hull KR after serving a one-match ban, Kelly has three half-backs at the top of their game vying for the two available spots.

Ryan Brierley and Jamie Ellis were at the heart of last Friday’s 22-12 home triumph over leaders Hull FC, with Kelly admitting he faces a massive choice ahead of the trip to Craven Park – although it’s a choice that excites him.

“This half-back choice is a great scenario,” enthused Kelly, who takes charge of the Giants on the Friday night before leaving for Australia as the head coach of the England Academy squad the following morning.

“Everyone knows what a quality player Broughy is, but I thought Ryan Brierley and Jamie Ellis looked very comfortable together against Hull KR.

“For Ryan, in particular, to step up into his most accustomed position and play as well as he did obviously creates a dilemma.

“But as a coach you want those sort of conundrums. It’s clearly far better than having to pick from a skeleton squad.

“At the same time, stability in a line-up is important, and the more stability you have, the more chance you have of achieving success. So changing a winning side can be a very tough call to make.”
