DELIGHTED Brett Ferres has admitted his surprise England call has crowned a dream first half of 2013 for the in-form Giants back-rower.

The 27-year-old forward  was named in a 20-man squad for next Friday’s Origin Test against the Exiles at Warrington.

He is joined in the squad by Huddersfield teammates Eorl Crabtree and Leroy Cudjoe.

Their calls were widely anticipated, with the duo involved in the England Elite Training Squad.

But with Ferres not part of the set-up, he has revealed he was shocked to get the nod off national coach Steve McNamara – even though he believes he’s in the form of his career.

“I genuinely didn’t have a clue I was being considered,” said the Giants joint vice-captain .

“All I’ve been focusing on is doing my best for the Giants and making sure we maintain our great start to the season.

“But this England call-up has without doubt crowned a brilliant first half of the year for me.

“During that time I’ve been made vice-captain and played a part in helping us secure second place in the Super League table and reach the quarter-final of the Challenge Cup (at Warrington next month).

“I’ve also been pleased with the contribution I’ve been making.

“I’ve been happy with my form, and it’s the most consistent I’ve been in my career.

“Obviously, I’m the first to admit there are areas in my game I can improve, and hopefully being part of the England set-up will help further develop my career.”

Ferres was told about his England selection the day after helping the Giants secure a 13th Super League XVIII triumph of the season against St Helens.

And he’s now hoping to round off a memorable week by helping Huddersfield chalk up another top-flight triumph at Hull KR on Friday (8.00).

“That would be the perfect end to a fantastic week,” said Ferres.

“Although everyone wants to represent their country, doing your best for your club is always the main priority. Playing for England is a bonus.

“So the most important thing at the moment is winning on Friday, which is something we’re confident of doing.”
