Paul Anderson thinks the Huddersfield Giants are making too many errors because they’re trying too hard.

The Huddersfield chief once again watched his side hit the self-destruct button to gift hosts Hull a 30-6 Super League victory at the KC Stadium on Thursday night.

Giants’ errors were responsible for the concession of the opening two tries, while a Scott Grix penalty laid the foundations for the Black and Whites to grab their third.

The Grix challenge on Gareth Ellis sparked a minor brawl, with captain Danny Brough involved in a second bout of fisticuffs with Hull’s Richard Whiting towards the end of the game.

On top of that, Anderson was forced to watch on as his side continually threw out loose passes or knocked-on under relatively little pressure.

And the Giants chief feels these errors are being made in a desperate bid to try and dig themselves out of a hole.

“There’s a lot of frustration out there at the moment,” said Anderson.

“When things are going wrong you can lose your composure, and we saw that again the other night.

“The incident with Broughy towards the end of the game was a prime example. Everyone knows he’s a fierce competitor and he was frustrated because of the way things were going, and that’s why he reacted the way he did.

“And when you get frustrated and things aren’t happening for you, that’s when you try and make up for it, and, lo and behold, it often ends up getting worse.

“Unfortunately, that’s where we’re at right now.

“I know that’s what’s happening here, because it happened to me when I was a player.

“I remember there was a spell when I was at Bradford when I was coming up with three or four errors every game.

“It was getting to the point where I was thinking: ‘I need to cut out the errors, I need to cut out the errors’. As a result of thinking about that, I kept on making the errors.

“So, in other words, the more frustrated you get, the more the errors will come.”

And having gone through that process of anxiety himself, the former Great Britain prop knows the tide will eventually turn.

“At times like this, it’s vital you keep believing in yourself and each other,” added the head coach.

“We know we’re a good team, we’re obviously just not showing that right now.

“But if we remain positive, pull together and work as hard as we can as a collective, things will start to fall back into place and lady luck will begin to shine on us once again.

“There’s nothing dramatically wrong with what we’re doing, we know what we have to do to fix things up.

“The key is getting back to the fundamentals, winning the ruck, getting good shoulder contact and bending people back, because that’s what Hull did defending against us the other night, and we saw the result.

“Staying strong and remaining positive is vital for us.”
