HUDDERSFIELD Giants secured their first Valvoline Cup victory of the season with a nail-biting 26-24 triumph over Bradford Bulls at the YMCA.
After leading 26-12 at half-time, the club’s Under 20s side was forced to hang on as the visitors threw everything at the Giants’ defence in a desperate attempt to snatch a late winner.
The win was just what Huddersfield needed after losing their opening three fixtures, including last week’s disappointing 38-4 defeat at Harlequins.
But with a relatively strong side taking to the field, hopes were always high that this could be the week when they would open their account.
And the hosts certainly made their intentions clear early on, grabbing tries from Danny Kirmond, Gregg McNally, Kyle Wood, Matthew Sarsfield and Joe Wardle and three goals from Danny Ansell to open up their 14-point interval advantage.
Unfortunately, the Giants were unable to add to that tally in a fraught second half, but it did make for a thrilling finale!
Hopefully, Huddersfield will now be able to build on this first success and secure a second victory when they entertain Wigan Warriors at the YMCA a week today (2.00).
