TOP Huddersfield Giants tryscorer Jermaine McGillvary is hoping his first Huddersfield win at Castleford is the start of something big.

The 24-year-old winger scored twice as the Giants briefly returned to the top of the Super League XVIII table with their 40-24 triumph against the Tigers.

Those scores took McGillvary to nine for the season – one ahead of Shaun Lunt, who has now crossed eight times after grabbing one at Wheldon Road.

But while McGillvary was delighted to score the tries, he was even more pleased to savour Giants success at the home of the Tigers for the first time.

And he’s hoping that proves an omen for the rest of the season.

“I did win at Castleford when I was on loan at Barrow in a Challenge Cup game a couple of seasons ago,” said McGillvary.

“But this is the first time I’ve won there with Huddersfield, which is obviously a great feeling.

“Things like that do sometimes prey at the back of you mind, but it’s something I don’t need to worry about any more and I hope it’s a sign of things to come.

“At the start of the year, we won at St Helens for the first time in Super League and now we’ve won at Cas for the first time in five attempts.

“Those are bonuses to me, and I hope it means we’re better placed than ever to go on to even bigger and better things this season. I don’t see why that won’t be the case.”

But McGillvary knows that to guarantee more successes further down the track, they can’t afford to relax in the manner they did at the weekend to gift their hosts three tries in the final seven minutes.

“That finish spoilt a lot of our previous good work,” he added. “We were gutted when we came off at the end.

“I’d have to say that last seven minutes were the worst of our season so far, and there were no excuses for it.

“We’d worked so hard defensively when we were down to 12 men in the second half (Jamie Cording was sin-binned for holding down in the 62nd minute) and we didn’t concede during that time.

“So to let in three tries when we were back at full strength simply wasn’t acceptable, and I know we won’t be allowed to get away with that again!”
