Rick Stone is urging his Giants to make a strong start in Sunday’s Middle 8s derby battle at Batley.

The new Huddersfield head coach has been far from impressed with the way his side has performed in the opening exchanges of the first four games under his command.

Sluggish starts were certainly at the root cause of the defeats to St Helens in Super League and the opening Middle 8s encounters at Salford Red Devils.

And the Australian boss doesn’t want to see another repeat this weekend.

“One of this things that has disappointed me has been our starts. They’ve been poor for us,” said Stone.

“This is one of a number of things we’ve been looking to improve, and hopefully we’ll see that at Batley on Sunday.

“We’ve got to make sure we come out of the blocks with everyone else and play with the appropriate intensity.

“If we do that we’ll put ourselves in a good position and can think about pushing on.

“We expect a reaction from Batley after their heavy loss at London Broncos last weekend, especially as this is their first home game in the Middle 8s, so we’ve got to be ready right from the start.”
