MARTIN ASPINWALL is hoping his first Super League XV starting performance of the season will be good enough to keep him in the choice 17 for some time to come.

The 28-year-old started the clash against Warrington at loose-forward and earned praise from head coach Nathan Brown for the way he played.

It was the former Great Britain winger’s first top-flight appearance of the year since his switch to the pack midway through last season.

And even though Aspinwall admitted his match fitness is still lacking, he was pleased with the way he played against the Wolves and hopes he’ll be given the chance to build on that at Wakefield Wildcats on Saturday night.

“Losing the match was disappointing, particularly as we did put ourselves in a position to win it,” said Aspinwall.

“There was very little between the two sides, and I think the only difference was that they took their chances and we didn’t take ours.

“We always knew it was going to be tough, because Warrington will be right up there this season, but after having such a good win at Hull KR last week we had high hopes we could carry it on.

“And it was even more disappointing for me as this was the first time I’ve played this season, and I’d obviously hoped to play my part in a winning display.

“But I was still generally happy with what I did out there, and I hope Nathan feels the same way.

“He told me at the start of the season that if one of the other second-rowers is injured, I’ll get my chance, and he was true to his word when Scott Grix couldn’t play because of his damaged finger.

“But that still doesn’t mean it wasn’t frustrating having to watch from the stands for the first three weeks.

“I just hope that now I’ve had my chance I’ve shown everyone I deserve to carry on being in this side.”
