Leroy Cudjoe is looking forward to handing the goalkicking duties back to the returning Danny Brough so he can focus fully on improving his own game.

The Giants centre landed five goals from five attempts – including one magnificent touchline effort – during last Friday’s 44-30 Super League defeat at in-form Castleford Tigers.

That came six days after kicking a late conversion during the 36-10 shock home defeat to Salford Red Devils following the earlier departure of Brough with an ankle and jaw injury.

But with the inspirational Giants captain having been declared fit for Sunday’s clash against Bradford Bulls at the John Smith’s Stadium, Cudjoe is happy to step aside and stick with his 100% six-out-of-six haul for the season.

“Broughy can take the goalklcking duties off me with the greatest of pleasure,” said the England threequarter.

“To be honest, I don’t really take kicking too seriously. I practice here and there, and when asked I’ll happily do it, but I do see myself very much as third choice behind Broughy and Scott Grix.

“And, at the moment, I know I need to be focusing on improving my own game rather than anything else.

“It was good to get a try and kick a few goals at Castleford last week, but overall it was another individual performance I wasn’t all that happy about.

“It wasn’t the performance I expect from myself. and I know I need to keep working hard on my combinations with the right edge to get back to a level where I want to be.

“That’s what I need to be focusing on.”

Cudjoe will be hoping a clash against a Bulls side who will be relegated this weekend if they’re beaten by the Giants will help him get back to his best.

The 26-year-old former Newsome Panthers junior produced big games to help the Giants win 66-18 at Odsal in March and 54-16 at Magic Weekend in May and he’d love to complete a hat trick this weekend – although he’ll take nothing for granted.

“This really is the time for us to start picking up our game. It’s reaching a very important stage of the season,” he added.

“So, hopefully, we’ll start getting back to our best against Bradford on Sunday.

“But even though they could go down this weekend we know they can pose a threat.

They’re still a good team on their day, and that’s the team we’re preparing to play. Any side that includes players like Luke Gale and Brett Kearney has to be taken seriously.

“They have the ability to capitalise on any weakness in a side’s defence, and we know how much we need to improve our defence.

“When you score 30 points in a game, like we did at Cas last Friday, you should certainly pick up the two League points, but our defence let us down massively.

“Too many people were doing different stuff, which hurt us a lot. We just need to get back to working hard for each other and with each other, whether that’s the middle working hard to help the edges or the edges all doing the same thing.

“If we get that right then we know everything else will start to fall into place and we’ll become one of the toughest teams to beat.”
