Huddersfield Giants 20-year-old prop forward Josh Johnson has penned a contract extension until the end of the 2016 season.
The academy product has played in three first team games this year and now has the long term security he wanted to establish himself as a Super League regular.
Johnson said: “My aim at the start of the year was to get an early extension to my contract and obviously I am pleased that it’s sorted out and I have a great chance here to become a fully-fledged Super League player.
“I played a lot last year with Batley and I know that will form part of my ongoing development as there are some great props here at the club to get in front of.
“I am lucky that the coach here is a former prop and he has been great for my career as have the strength and fitness guys who keep working me to get bigger and stronger.”
Huddersfield Giants head coach Paul Anderson added: “Josh is deserving of a longer opportunity at the club and he is well aware of what he needs to do to keep improving as a professional.
“Patience can be the key for younger players especially in the front row environment and I am sure all our supporters will watch his progress with great interest.
“Josh has moved from scholarship to Under 19 side, then into the Championship on dual registration and hopefully soon a Super League regular with our club and a lot of people can be very proud of playing a part in his pathway.
“The next step for Josh though is arguably the toughest to take, but he has the security of a contract now and he will get every bit of mentoring, help, coaching, conditioning and lifestyle management he needs to give himself his best chance.”
The Giants Under 19s maintained their strong Academy start to the season with a 34-20 home win over Wakefield.
