DANNY BROUGH could be Scotland’s main World Cup selection target.

And the Scots are also eyeing up Giants teammate Shaun Lunt as they look to build a strong squad for this autumn’s global competition.

Huddersfield skipper Brough is currently a member of England’s Elite Training squad and made his country debut in last summer’s second Test against the Exiles.

But the 29-year-old goalkicking half-back was left bitterly disappointed after his controversial omission from England’s autumn series squad – which could prompt the Scots to make a move.

Brough began his professional career with Scotland and was their captain during the 2008 World Cup. He then changed his allegiance after being promised a key role with England under national chief Steve McNamara – something that then failed to materialise at the end of the 2012 campaign.

That suggests Brough has already fallen down the England pecking order, just like Lunt, who played for his country in the 2010 tour to Australia and New Zealand but was back in the England Knights this winter.

As a result, the duo’s best chance of playing in the 2013 World Cup could be making the Scotland switch.

Coach Steve McCormack is refusing to confirm if his country is ready to make a move, but admits nothing has been ruled out.

“We’re not ruling anything out at this stage, but we have looked at our options and identified everyone we want,” he said.

“We obviously want to be as competitive as we can throughout the World Cup.”
