HUDDERSFIELD Giants' Matty Dawson is hoping he doesn’t have to wait too long to make his third Super League appearance.

The 22-year-old winger made his Giants’ top-flight debut at Warrington Wolves last September in his side’s heavy 54-6 defeat.

But even though he was far from being Huddersfield’s least effective player on the day, the former Castleford youngster had to wait until the stunning 32-8 Leeds Rhinos’ Super League XVIII triumph 12 days ago to make appearance No2.

Dawson also impressed that night, coming in as a late replacement for Jermaine McGillvary, who failed to recover from a back spasm by the day of the game.

Unfortunately, his Headingley performance as the Giants maintained their lead at the top of the table wasn’t enough to keep his place for Saturday’s home clash against Hull as McGillvary returned to action in powerful style for the 24-10 triumph.

As a result, Dawson is expecting to play the waiting game once again, with the in-form Aaron Murphy looking a rock-solid bet to keep his place on the opposite flank.

But Dawson is remaining upbeat and is determined to do what he can to make sure that third top-flight start is just around the corner.

“I was pleased with the way I went against Leeds,” said Dawson, who is in the final season of a three-year deal following his arrival from the Tigers.

“And to then get some good comments from Paul Anderson on the back ot it made me feel even better.

“But I always knew that once Jerry got back to full fitness he’d probably come straight back in, because he’s such a great player and had been showing top form before he picked up his injury.

“That’s something I fully accept.

“All I can do is make the best of every chance I get.

“Paul has said he’ll pick on form and he’s been tue to that, and that’s all you can really ask as a player.

“Hopefully, I showed in the Leeds game what I can do, and I want to be able to string a few performances together and try and get a new deal.

“I joined the Giants because of the vision they had to be a top club and win trophies. I believe that’s definitely going to happen, so I want to stay around if I can.

“At the end of the day, that’s going to be down to me and the way I play.”
