A QUESTION that came up at our latest meeting was “Have you heard of Sam’s Team and what is it all about?”

Tim Jones, the Giants Under16s Scholarship coach went on to answer.

Basically Sky’s ‘Boots ‘n’ All’ programme has followed Wigan’s Sam Tomkins over a number of weeks in a Halifax school.

The project is run by Sky Sports and is called Living for Sports.

This is a nationwide project using sport as a tool to engage high school students to achieve the following:

Boost confidence.

Change behaviour.

Increase attainment.

Improve life skills.

Sam’s Team is not just about the playing side of the game, but the youngsters have to select the players, coaches, support staff, media staff, promotion of the event, and even designing of the kit!

It, therefore, shows other avenues within sport if they are unable to perform.

Tim then went on: “I have a similar programme running at Moorend Academy.

“I work with 11 year 9 students using sport again as a powerful tool to re-engage them to the importance of school, good behaviour, and respect.

“Hopefully, over the next seven weeks, the students will buy into our ideas and will enjoy their sport and will understand how important certain values are and that rules must be observed both on the field and in life.”

A couple of points from last week’s Magic Weekend article.

Firstly with regard to the term ‘oldies’. I have been ribbed playfully about using this term.

I do hope everyone else has taken it in the same vein- after all, I class myself in this category these days!

Secondly, does anyone know the two teenage lads mentioned? A lot of people have commented about their excellent attitude and would like to thank them, if not personally, then in a letter.

Finally, a reminder the last date for entering the ‘Giant Teaser’ is Sunday, June 23, the Leeds match.
