When we were talking about resurrecting some form of supporters group the other year, we had lots of ideas about what we could do.

They basically fell into two areas:

1 What could we offer our fans to make the Giants experience even greater?

2 How could we help the Giants achieve both their and our aim of being THE top Rugby League club?

With regard to the former, we have stuttered along, making both good decisions and bad. We tried lots of different ideas, some succeeded and some fell into another category! We now seem to be taking two steps forward and one step back.

There are lots of people out there with some brilliant ideas. Again, some successful (the Ken Davy cards at the end of last season) and some which are good but which have never left the drawing board.

There are many forums and Facebook (other social media do exist!) pages where people express both their disapproval of the team’s performance and put forward excellent suggestions for the general improvement of matters at the club.

My question to all of you is, and it is a serious one: “Why do you not join HGSA where we can all join together and make sure those positive ideas come to fruition?”.

We are not a clique. We want what is best for the club. And, as a large body of people, we can achieve far more than a cluster of small, disparate individuals, no matter how enthusiastic such a group is.

HGSA is constantly passing on matters which arise on these forums and pages, but we, and the club, lack the manpower to successfully see them through.

Which leads nicely into a point our former hooker mentioned when he was out guest last week.

Gary Hetherington, now the MD/CEO at the Rhinos, mentioned that Leeds has a backroom staff of over 150. This is possible because of the years of success which brings in large crowds which results in a large, excellently well-managed revenue.

Our equivalent falls far short of that number. This is not a dig at the club, merely a fact of life. Our crowds are small, so our income falls well short of Leeds’, which means they are unable to put in place many of the excellent suggestions made by the fans.

So, the next time you feel like saying “Why hasn’t the club done what I suggested?”, why not say to yourself “I have an excellent suggestion, I’ll consult my mates at HGSA, and we’ll volunteer to help the club”.

Why not start this coming Sunday where you can help us to help the club make the Cricket Day at Lascelles Hall a phenomenal success?

Contact the HGSA’s Dave Calverley (07887 878425) or Giants marketing manager James Brammer (01484 484114) for further information.
