THE Heritage Project is well and truly gathering pace.

There are lots of new items on the website. A couple are my favourites.

The 1881-2 Fixture Card. It measures 6 x 2.75 inches [15.5 x 7 cm]. The image on the site really does not do it justice.

And the 1895 Fixture Card. This is a miniature booklet containing both Cricket & Football (ie Rugby) fixtures.

It is thought these were the fixtures which would have been played had the split not taken place – although most of the clubs mentioned did go on to form the NRU.

Both can be found via the Heritage website www.huddersfieldrlheritage.co.uk.

So, time for a little more of the club’s history, under the title of ‘Decline and Revival’.

Huddersfield Rugby League Club was on the point of collapse in 1989.

A new board of directors took over and injected some much-needed financial resources into the club.

The ‘Barracudas’ and ‘Arena 84’ were dropped for the 1988/9 season.

Nigel Stephenson was appointed as coach and Huddersfield were helped by several clubs, in particular Featherstone Rovers, to put a reasonable squad together.

As well as beginning to improve the playing staff, the new owners also carried out a considerable amount of work on the Fartown ground and by the end of the 1989/90 season significant progress was being made.

Average crowds topped 1,500 for the first time since the 1970s.

Shortly after the 1991/2 season had begun, Alex Murphy took over as coach in 1991.

Huddersfield were the first champions of the newly-formed third division in 1991/2.

Promotion to the Second Division had been achieved, and there was pride once again in the famous claret and gold shirt.

The expense of this achievement cost the club dearly and a new financial crisis arrived.

However, along came a bright new consortium who began to shape the future of the club once again.

The club left Fartown and moved to Huddersfield Town’s home ground at Leeds Road in 1992.

So now, what’s on the agenda for the Association in the New Year?

First up, League Weekly publisher Danny Lockwood will be our guest speaker on Tuesday, January 8.

And next season, there will be a whole new pre-match entertainment package to enhance your match-day experience.

In conjunction with the club, we shall be putting on the following events in the Fantastic Media Suite (swimming pool entrance):

Pre-London Broncos (February 10). Junior Disco – free for one and all.

Pre-Wigan (February 17). Band – free to season-tickets holders and HGSA members, small cost to others.

Pre-Bradford Bulls (March 3). Sporting Memories and memorabilia – a chance to swap/sell/buy/view memorabilia, which is free to season-tickets holders and HGSA members, small cost to others.

There will be a fans forum in March, which will be an all-star, distinguished panel – free to season-tickets holders and HGSA members, £2 to others.

If these prove to be successful then more will follow. So, spread the word!
