Brett Ferres is desperate for the Huddersfield Giants to use the pain of their most disappointing defeat of the season as the motivation for a top-quality play-off winning performance at home to Catalan Dragons on Friday.

The Huddersfield vice captain admits the nature of last week’s 54-7 thrashing at Wigan Warriors has hit the squad hard.

But he knows the pain of that bitter experience can be erased if they rediscover their top Super League form against the fired-up French in Friday’s sudden-death fixture.

“Everything about last Thursday was awful. It was by far the most disappointing game of our season,” said the 28-year-old England World Cup back-rower.

“We’d worked so hard throughout the year to finish in the top four and earn the chance to have a week off, so to dish up what we did was totally unacceptable.

“It was a defeat and performance that really hit us hard, and the last thing we want is to go through an experience like that again against Catalan.

“They’ll obviously be coming to us full of confidence after their win at Leeds last week.

“But it’s our intention to go out there with a bang on Friday night, enjoy ourselves and get back to playing the way that earned us a third-place finish.

“If we do that, then we’ll have made the most of our second chance and we’ll still be in with a shout of reaching the Grand Final. That still remains our ultimate goal.”
