CASTLEFORD Tigers are looking to young Giants half-back Kyle Wood to fill the big hole left by the departing Brent Sherwin.

The 32-year-old Sherwin has joined the injury-hit Catalans Dragons to the end of the season and is likely to make his debut for them in Saturday’s home game against Salford.

At the same time, Wood could be in the Tigers’ Super League side to face Hull FC at The Jungle.

That move has come just days after Wood had returned to the Giants from Co-operative Championship club Batley where he is on a dual registration.

And Huddersfield coach Nathan Brown is delighted with the way things have worked out and that Wood has the chance to develop under Tigers coach Terry Matterson during a month-long loan spell.

“Kyle was keen to come back and spend some extra time at the Giants,” said Brown.

“Terry has come in for him at Cas and it gives him an opportunity to perform in Super League.

“I think he has proven himself to be more than handy over the last few years as a National League player and obviously Super League is the next step.

“Kyle is definitely ready to be given an opportunity, and how he performs is obviously up to him.

“Most players just need an opportunity and he is another young kid who has earned that opportunity, and I’m sure whatever he does now he’ll only get better as time goes on.

“Kyle will bring a good kicking game and he also carries the ball well himself and he will bring them some nice enthusiasm and keenness.

“The deal is initially for a month and then both clubs will look at it.

“Long term, it is a win, win situation for the Giants.”

Castleford moved that swiftly to bring in 20-year-old former Sheffield Eagles half-back Wood as a stop-gap replacement, that he was unable to play for the Giants in last night’s Under 20s clash against Warrington.

Meanwhile, two of the Giants’ juniors sides are in action this weekend.

The Academy host Warrington on Sunday (12.30), while the Under 16s are at home to the Wolves tomorrow (1.15).

Wakefield Wildcats have signed 24-year-old Samoan prop forward Charlie Leaeno as a replacement for Australian Shane Tronc, who was released for personal reasons just 11 matches into the season.
