Oli Roberts is hoping his Giants tryscoring debut is a taste of things to come.

After a 12-month wait to finally wear the claret and gold for the first time following his arrival from Bradford Bulls, the 21-year-old back-row forward took just five minutes to break his duck in the impressive 38-6 weekend pre-season win at Hull KR.

It was a performance that earned him praise off head coach Paul Anderson.

And he’s hoping it was enough to give him a place in the narrowed-down squad for the Giants’ second and final warm-up match at home to Catalans Dragons on Saturday.

“It was absolutely fantastic to finally get out there with the boys,” said Roberts.

“And to score the try early on was obviously a massive bonus.

“But whether that’ll be enough to earn a spot next week I’m not too sure at this stage. Hopefully it will.

“My aim at the moment is to give the coaching staff a bit of a selection headache, and I’d certainly like to think I’ve done that.

“Although I’m pretty happy with the way things went I know there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

“But to finally get that debut out of the way is definitely a good feeling.”
