FORMER Newsome Panthers junior James Martin is the latest Academy player to secure a Giants’ Super League contract.

The 19-year-old back-rower (right) has made a positive impression on Huddersfield head coach Jon Sharp.

He follows in the footsteps of Michael Lawrence and Chris Lawson, who will also be joining the Giants’ full-time squad for next season.

And head coach Jon Sharp believes his latest squad recruit has all the makings of a Super League player.

“James has a nice frame on him, and looks extremely athletic,” said Sharp.

“He’s got good line speed and powerful leg drive in the tackle, and when he carries the ball he can be a real handful.

“On top of that, he has a really good attitude, and there are times when you have to rein in his enthusiasm. As a coach, you really can’t complain about that.

“But, like it is with the other players who have been promoted to our Super League squad for next year, it’s a case of making sure he continues to work hard.”

Martin said: “I am absolutely delighted to be signing a full time contract with the club.

“I have been playing since I was eight years old and joined from Newsome Panthers, coming through the club’s scholarship scheme and into the Academy

“I’ve only ever trained with the first team a couple of times it is very tough and very physical but thoroughly enjoyable.

“I am combining my university course with the Giants and it will be a tough year, but both parties have been very helpful giving me the best opportunity to fit everything in.”

He added: “I love playing the game and I love the standard I’m at now. I just want to keep improving and play as long as I can.”
