PAUL SMITH is determined to put a nightmare season's start behind him and help put the Giants back on the road to Super League recovery.

The 29-year-old back rower missed just six senior games last time around.

But he has yet to figure this year after suffering knee and rib injuries in the pre-season win over Wigan.

Those setbacks are now behind him.

And after completing a very solid 80 minutes in yesterday's Senior Academy clash against St Helens (report Page 46), Smith is hoping to get the nod to face Leeds Rhinos at Headingley on Sunday.

"I've been devastated with the way things have gone for me, and for the team, so far this season," said Smith.

"Seeing the way we lost against Hull KR really hit me hard, and I hope I can get back in the side and help us start winning again.

"My fitness is good. I played 80 minutes yesterday and 80 minutes at Leigh last weekend, so I hope I've done enough.

"The injury I picked up against Wigan was pretty scary. I thought I'd broken my leg at first.

"But now I'm feeling fit and strong and ready to play!"
