A VERY interesting choice of referee for tomorrow's Challenge Cup fourth-round clash at Halifax.

No doubt many Giants fans will have already spotted the man in the middle will be a certain Ronnie Laughton.

It will be the first major Huddersfield game the Barnsley official will have controlled since the controversial fourth round home tie with St Helens exactly a year ago.

Several crucial calls went against the Giants that day, resulting in a narrow 26-22 defeat.

So incensed was head coach Jon Sharp over the disallowing of one of his side's tries that he brought a lap-top computer into the press conference to show the error of the match official's ways.

Had the try been awarded, Sharp was convinced his side would have gone on and knocked out the current Cup holders.

As a result, however, it only resulted in Sharp being reprimanded by the RFL over not voicing his concerns through the proper channels.

But another consequence was that Laughton has been kept away from the Giants since.

That, of course, will change tomorrow.

By all accounts, Laughton has been refereeing well this season, and hopefully that will be in evidence at The Shay.

However, given the way the respective clubs have started their competitive seasons, it would be a monumental disappointment if refereeing decisions cost the Giants the tie!
