EXPERIENCED Lee Gilmour knows the Giants have the ability to win this season’s Challenge Cup.
But the former Great Britain international also knows his side can’t take Sunday’s fourth-round trip to Championship club Batley Bulldogs for granted.
The 33-year-old back-row forward has won the Challenge Cup on five occasions, including St Helens’ Twickenham final triumph over Huddersfield in 2006.
And Gilmour is sure that if the Giants show the right attitude throughout this season’s famous knockout competition, he could be savouring success for a sixth time.
“We’ve definitely got the squad to do it,” said Gilmour, who also won the Challenge Cup with Bradford Bulls in 2003. “Although we’ve had a bad Easter with the defeats at Crusaders and Catalan, things have been looking good for us.
“That’s convinced me that if we give it a good go we can go a long way in the competition.
“But it’s also important not to get too carried away and look too far ahead.
“First of all, we’ve got to get past Batley, who won’t make it easy for us up at the Mount. It’s my local ground and I’ve got a couple of good friends at the club, which makes it even more attractive for me.
“And I know Batley are a good side and are doing quite well in the Championship, so we need to be on our toes. As a result, we can’t go there with a poor attitude. We’ve got to go there, do a job and get through to the next round.”
Although head coach Nathan Brown has yet to finalise his squad for Sunday’s derby clash, Gilmour is hoping to get the nod to play, particularly after his solid all-round game in Saturday’s 13-12 Super League defeat at Catalan.
Giants centre Graeme Horne will appear before the RFL disciplinary committee this evening for making dangerous contact with an opponent in Saturday’s Engage Super League Round 13 fixture against Catalan at Stade Gilbert Brutus, Perpignan.
The date and kick-off time of the GIants' Super League clash with Hull FC at the KC Stadium have been changed.
Due to Sky Sports opting to cover the fixture, it has been moved from Friday, May 27, to Sunday, May 29, with a kick-off time of 12.30.
