PROUD Paul Anderson is backing Eorl Crabtree to make a big impact against Australia.
Giants prop Crabtree has been named on the bench for England in today’s big Four Nations clash against the Kangaroos at Wigan’s DW Stadium (2.30).
It will be the first time the 27-year-old will have faced the might of the Australians, with Crabtree having made his full Test debut in France in June.
Huddersfield assistant coach Anderson knows it’s a massive step up for Crabtree, as well as England, who were far from impressive in beating France 34-12 in their Four Nations opener.
But the former Great Britain prop, who played 10 times for Great Britain and also earned five England caps, believes Crabtree is more than ready to face the challenge head-on.
“This is going to be the biggest test in Eorl’s career so far and I know he’s ready for it,” said Anderson, left.
“It’s a call that’s thoroughly deserved and obviously comes on the back of some of the excellent stuff he’s done throughout the year. I’m personally delighted he’s finally getting the recognition he deserves.
“And I also think he could play a crucial role for us.
“As well as being a very big man, he gives the side something the Australians wouldn’t have faced before in that he’s strong, athletic, skilful and possesses a great offload. There’s no question he’s got the ability to make a very positive impression.”
Anderson knows today’s game is going to be the toughest Crabtree has ever experienced.
But the Giants No2 is confident the fellow front-rower will handle the experience.
“Knowing Eorl as I do, I’m sure he’ll relish the challenge, even though he’s bound to be a bit nervous,” added Anderson.
“To be honest, when he was named in the initial England squad last month he came to me for advice about the best way to handle a game against the Aussies if he was lucky enough to get picked.
“I just told him to go out there and enjoy himself. It’s if you start putting pressure on yourself that you can struggle.
“I know how much he wants to play and make a good impression, not just for himself but for the club as a whole, and there’s no reason at all why he won’t.”
Top RL agent and after-dinner speaker David Howes, who is co-ordinating Eorl Crabtree’s testimonial, is the guest speaker at the Senior Giants meeting on Wednesday. It’s in the Fantastic Media Suite at the Galpharm at 2.15. All are welcome.
