AS the marketing manager of Huddersfield Giants, it's up to Jonathan Wilkinson to get the fans flooding into the Galpharm Stadium for Super League fixtures.

It's up to the former University of Huddersfield marketing graduate to introduce promotions to entice the casual viewer to make the trip to the ground and then ensure they enjoy the whole "gameday experience" once they are there.

And even though the Giants are confident of making a positive impression in the top-flight of British rugby league, starting with their opening Super League X fixture at Leigh Centurions on February 12, it can prove a difficult task.

Wilkinson may have the best marketing ideas in the world, but if the team is not performing on the field his chances of success are almost zero.

To guarantee big crowds, the Giants need to produce big performances.

That would be manna from heaven for someone in Wilkinson's position, and that's why matches like the Giants' home game against Leeds Rhinos 18 months ago provides such fond memories for the 22-year-old.

Huddersfield were given little chance of winning this particular McAlpine clash.

But against all the odds, coach Tony Smith's side came up with a massive display to leave Leeds stunned and send the Giants fans home happy.

And Wilkinson is hoping there will be similar scenes during the course of 2005.

"That win over Leeds Rhinos was absolutely fantastic," reflected Wilkinson.

"The fans loved the game and to see so many happy fans leaving the ground gave me a real buzz.

"I could see the enjoyment and excitement in their faces and I knew that they would be back again.

"I was still a student at the University of Huddersfield at the time, but I could see how much marketing potential could be generated out of a win like this.

"Now I'm in a position to do something about it, and I know how much easier my job will be if the boys do the business on the field, which I know they can.

"That win over Leeds was full of thrills, spills, twists and turns and for sheer entertainment was almost impossible to beat.

"In fact, it was a marketing officer's dream!"
