RUGGED forward Ben Roarty reckons the answer to the Giants' current problems lie on the training pitch.
With Mick Slicker and Eorl Crabtree both sidelined, Roarty played at prop in yesterday's Tetley's Super League clash with Castleford at the Galpharm.
While the role was unusual, the outcome of the showdown was worryingly familiar.
Seventh-placed Huddersfield's 29-12 defeat was their 11th in 15 matches, their fifth in a row and their second by basment club Castleford in a month.
But Aussie Roarty, who signed from Penrith Panthers before the 2003 season, insists the Giants can still pip Wakefield, currently sixth, and Warrington, eighth, to the coveted last play-off spot.
"We don't look at what the other two are doing, just ourselves, and we know we have to get back onto that training pitch and work twice as hard to put things right," said the 29-year-old.
"Yesterday's was a game that we looked on as one we should have won, and it's a really big disappointment we didn't.
"I don't really know what went wrong, but we will look long and hard at the video and I know we're a bunch of blokes who are giving 100% and we will continue to do that in a bid to get back to where we were earlier this season.
"We've got players with real character, and we will keep our heads up and keep going. At no stage will we throw the towel in.
"There are five games to go, 10 points to be won, and we'll be going for it, starting at Widnes next Sunday."
* The Giants' family cricket match, which is being organised by Roarty and teammate Mick Slicker, has been rearranged for Sunday, August 29 at Laund Hill.
The match, which will involve a host of Giants players and staff, is between `England' and the `Rest of the World' and starts at 1.00.
It should have taken place at Golcar Cricket Club last month but was rained off.
* The Giants Under 18s were 58-14 winners over Keighley Cougars in the Junior Academy match which was played as a curtain-raiser to yesterday's clash with Casteford (match report tomorrow).
The Under 21s take on Salford in a Senior Academy game at The Willows tonight (7.30).
