NEW signing Matt Sarsfield is determined to build on his England Academy heroics and take his Giants chance by storm.

The 19-year-old back-row forward will make his Huddersfield debut as part of a young line-up in Sunday’s pre-season clash at Batley Bulldogs (2.00) after moving to the Galpharm Stadium on a three-year contract from Wigan Warriors.

It will be Sarsfield’s first appearance since he starred for England in last month’s Test series triumph over Australian Schoolboys.

But the Leigh-born forward knows that success will count for little when he makes his bow in the famous claret and gold this weekend.

“Beating a team like Australia gives you a lot of confidence,” said Sarsfield, who will be joined in Sunday’s Giants side by fellow new signings Jon Molloy (also Wigan), Matty Dawson (Castleford Tigers) and Joe Wardle (Bradford Bulls).

“And that’s something I intend to take into my opening game on Sunday.

“This is the first chance I’ve had to show everyone here what I can do, so it’s absolutely massive.

“I’ve already set myself a target of playing Super League here this year, and I know the stronger my performance this weekend, the greater will be my chance of fulfilling that ambition.

“Nathan (Brown) hasn’t seen me play for him yet, so I know important it is for me to create a good opening impression.

“I’ve moved to Huddersfield because I see it as an excellent chance to help further my career, and that process gets under way this weekend.”

Sarsfield joined his new teammates for the resumption of pre-season training this week following their Christmas break.

Most of the Giants’ Super League squad are now back, including fit-again stand-off Kevin Brown (right), who has recovered from hernia surgery.
