GIANTS coach Jon Sharp has ordered his squad to work extra hard in training this week to guarantee a happy Christmas.

His Super League players are working up until Christmas Eve and will not have to report back for duty until December 27.

They will also be given time off on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day and January 2.

But to make up for the time away from the training ground, Sharp expects his players to work extra hard over the festive period.

"We all appreciate the need to spend as much time as possible with our families at this time of the year," said Sharp.

"But we've also got into the full pre-season swing and don't want to lose too much of the momentum.

"So I hope we have struck the right balance between the two.

"The players definitely deserve some time off because they have worked exceptionally hard so far.

"They are continuing to enjoy working under the tough fitness regime of Geoff Evans (the Giants new Head of Athletic Performance), but I'm sure they'll enjoy having a few days off."

Between Christmas and New Year Sharp will put the final plans in place for the pre-season match against Halifax at The Shay on Monday, January 3 (7.00).

They are expected to field a mainly Academy squad for the Infirmary Cup clash, although a hanful of Super League players will play.

* Giants favourite Stanley Gene will meet the fans at the Sporting Pride Shop in Cloth Hall Street tomorrow from 6.00.
