FORMER Giants coach Tony Smith believes the experience gained during his three seasons at Huddersfield has helped steer Leeds Rhinos to the brink of Super League Grand Final glory.

Smith's Rhinos go head-to-head with arch rivals Bradford Bulls in front of a sell-out Old Trafford crowd on Saturday (6.00) for the right to be crowned Super League champions.

It's a far cry from Smith's first season at Huddersfield when his side suffered relegation from Super League in 2001.

But the Australian believes the lessons he learned during that tough campaign have stood Leeds in good stead as they finished the season as League leaders.

"I may have suffered relegation with the Giants in my first season, but I still regard it as one of the most enjoyable," he reflected.

"It was during that time that it shaped my coaching philosophies and the way I have gone about my work ever since.

"Hard work has always been the key and that's been the case at Leeds this season.

"I think everyone recognised the potential of this team, and this year it's been a case of trying to fulfil that potential.

"Our style of play has been very entertaining, which many are now appreciating.

"But the philosophy remains the same, even as we approach the Grand Final on Saturday.

"Just like it was at the Giants, it's the performance that counts.

"If we perform well, the result will take care of itself, and that's a philosophy that won't change just because the next game is a Super League Grand Final."
