NEW Giants signing Steve Snitch has declared his intention to claim Jim Gannon's vacant prop spot.

The injured Gannon will miss the opening two months of Super League XI after undergoing knee surgery.

His absence is a big blow to coach Jon Sharp as he prepares for the opening-day trip to Leeds Rhinos on Sunday, February 12.

But the 22-year-old Snitch, who signed from Wakefield two months ago, is determined to provide the perfect cover.

"Jim's injury could be the opening I need," said the utility forward.

"Obviously, you don't like to see a teammate injured, and it'll be great when Jim returns to action.

"But while he's on the sidelines, there's going to be a place in the front row available, and I'd love it to go to me.

"There are more forwards than backs in our squad, which means there's massive competition for places in the pack.

"The key between now and the start of the season is for me, as one of the young guys, to keep my head down, work hard and show Jon Sharp what I can do.

"That's the only way to push myself into a starting spot.

"But that's what I intend to do. I'm here to work hard."
