HUDDERSFIELD Giants have signed winger Mat Gardner from Leeds Rhinos, with coach Jon Sharp tipping him to be a major Super League success.

The 20-year-old joins on a two-year contract after struggling to break into the first team at Headingley.

At 6ft 3in and 15½st, Gardner possesses both the size and speed - he has clocked 11 seconds for the 100m - to trouble top-flight defences.

And Sharp has no doubt he can do a big job for the Giants.

"Mat is a player with great physical presence and his strength and pace means he will be a handful for most defences," said Sharp.

"I am really looking forward to working with him and helping him to fulfil his potential and develop into a top Super League winger.

"I have watched him very closely over the last few seasons and believe he can do a very good job for us."

Gardner played for the England Academy team that beat the Australian Schoolboys for the first time two years ago and is seen as an automatic replacement for the departed Hefin O'Hare.
