HUDDERSFIELD Giants have no plans to scrap their pre-season McAlpine clash against Castleford Tigers.

The two teams will meet in the opening fixture of Super League IX on February 22 - just three weeks after going head-to-head in the friendly.

That raised initial doubts as to whether the clubs should play each other so close to such an important League opener.

But Giants head coach Jon Sharp has today confirmed the January 30 match will still go ahead and no alternative opposition will be sought.

"As far as I'm concerned, playing Castleford so close to our League meeting isn't a major issue," said Sharp.

"Although the pre-season game is just three weeks away from our League meeting, it's still not far enough down the track for me to show my hand.

"This match is as much about building up match fitness as working on combinations.

"So, in that sense, the fact we're playing Castleford doesn't make that much difference.

"It's just a co-incidence that we'll be coming up against them in what will be an exciting Super League opener."

Sharp will be meeting the fans at tonight's question and answer forum at the Chicago Rock Cafe (7.00 to 9.30pm).

It will be the first chance for Sharp and his coaching team to meet all the supporters at an official function, and he is excited about being handed this opportunity.

"It'll be interesting to get some feedback from the fans, because they're such a vitally important part of the club. In my eyes they are a major member of our team," added Sharp.

"I think that's why I'm looking forward to it so much."

The club are hoping for a bumper turn-out as the event will help raise cash for the squadbuilder fund.

Entry is £5, with the first drink free, and it is another chance for fans to buy season tickets.
