FIT-AGAIN Pat Richards will look to break Giants’ hearts for a second time this Super League year.
The 26-year-old Wigan ace missed last Friday’s heavy 46-12 home defeat to St Helens with a virus, but he will return against Huddersfield for tonight’s re-arranged top-flight clash at the JJB Stadium (8.00).
It’s a match the Warriors need to win to close the gap to one League point on fourth-placed Warrington Wolves.
Earlier in the year, Richards landed a last-minute touchline conversion to secure a dramatic 20-19 win for Wigan over the Giants at the Galpharm in March.
And the in-form goalkicking full-back would love to seal another win for Wigan over Huddersfield, even though he knows it would upset some of his closet rugby league mates.
Richards was a part of the Wests Tigers’ Australian NRL Grand Final-winning team of 2005 which also included Shane Elford, Jamahl Lolesi, John Skandalis and Paul Whatuira.
But he admits those friendships will count for very little between tonght.
“I’m really looking forward to tomorrow night. I know quite a few of the boys from Wests and we still keep in touch,” said Richards, pictured right.
“2005 was a special year for the Tigers and we love to get together and talk about it. We tend to meet up in the middle quite regularly, and I always enjoy catching up with them and hearing what they have to say.
“They are all quality players, with Paul Whatuira a very special talent. He is classy, defensively strong and scores lots of cracking tries. He’s definitely a threat.
“I watched their game against Warrington last weekend and, despite their League position, they’re a good side.
“They’ve lost a few games very narrowly, and although we beat them at their place earlier in the season, we didn’t deserve it.
“In a way, I felt for them, because they played so well, and I’m sure that will be at the back of their minds ahead of the game tomorrow.
“But this game is very important for us to keep in touch with Warrington and try and take fourth spot from them. To be honest, we’ll take a win however it comes.”
