POWERFUL Giants second-rower Matthew Whittaker could end up playing against the McAlpine club at the end of next month!

The 22-year-old has joined fellow Super League club Widnes Vikings on a month's loan after failing to break into coach Jon Sharp's senior side.

During that spell the Vikings entertain Huddersfield at the Halton Stadium on Sunday, August 22, and Giants officials will not stand in the way of their player competing against them.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for Matthew to gain some valuable Super League experience," said football manager Stuart Sheard.

"We're obviously well aware that during his loan spell there's a fixture against us.

"But we don't think it would be fair denying him a place in their Super League squad against us.

"After being recommended to Widnes by Halifax coach Anthony Farrell, who was impressed by him during his loan spell there, this is a great chance for Matthew to make a name for himself in the top-flight."

With Whittaker away and Stanley Gene remaining on the sidelines with a dislocated foot, head coach Jon Sharp is unlikely to make many changes for Friday's trip to St Helens (8.00).

That's despite another below-par performance against Warrington on Saturday when the Giants again suffered a second-half fade-out as they were beaten 34-18 at the McAlpine.
