HUDDERSFIELD Giants have pulled off a major coup by signing top Academy talent Matthew Whittaker from Super League rivals Leeds Rhinos.

The 17-year-old hooker was a regular in the Rhinos' Junior Academy Under 18s side.

He shot to prominence playing for England at Under 15s and Under 16s level - when he actually played on the wing!

But he has signed to play for the Giants at hooker, with football manager Stuart Sheard confident he wil make a big impression.

"Matthew will be a quality addition to our Academy squad," said Sheard.

"He is aggressive, skilful and strong.

"Leeds wanted to keep him to play for them on a full-time basis.

"But Matthew was very keen to continue his studies and play on a part-time basis.

"That's what we can offer him."
