WAKEFIELD coach John Kear praised the spirit and determination of his side after overcoming a mounting injury list to see off Salford.

The Wildcats ran out 29-10 winners at Belle Vue after a first-half blitz left the engage Super League newcomers with too much to do.

Damien Blanch and Ryan Atkins both touched down twice for Kear’s side, who needed to dig deep after losing starting scrum-half Scott Grix in the first half.

Grix was helped off the field after suffering ankle ligament damage and now joins a casualty list which already includes four other playmakers in Danny Brough, Jamie Rooney, Sam Obst and Tevita Leo-Latu.

Kear said: “That was a real backs against the wall effort. It was a superb 80-minute display.”
