HIGHLY-IMPRESSED Wakefield coach John Kear has praised the way the Giants youngsters performed to help beat his Super League side 24-16.

What was virtually a Huddersfield reserve side turned on the style to beat the Wildcats’ strongest available line-up.

Apart from Darrell Griffin, Danny Kirmond, Shaun Lunt, Larne Patrick and Andy Raleigh, the visitors’ side could only boast a handful of first-team appearances between them.

But they still proved too strong for the vastly-experienced Wildcats, with former Giants chief Kear quick to congratulate the men from the Galpharm.

“Although my main focus was obviously on what we were doing, and where we were going right and where we were going wrong, I have to compliment Huddersfield on the way they played,” said Kear.

“In the second half, in particular, I thought we put some decent stuff together.

“But we came up against a Huddersfield defence that deserves a tremendous amount of credit.

“Some of their last-ditch defence on their line was absolutely first class.

“Keeping their tryline intact obviously meant a lot to them, and fair play to them for that.

“They made it very difficult for us, and this was the sort of test we needed right now.

“Over recent years, the Giants have invested heavily in young players, and that investment is now paying off.

“They keep saying that some of them are now ready for Super League, and it’s obvious to me that several of them are not far away at all.

“Huddersfield have now definitely got a very deep squad and a very good quality squad right the way through.

“And for that I believe they deserve a great deal of credit.”
