THE Giants Junior Academy side let a 14-point advantage slip as they were held to a 34-34 draw by Widnes Vikings at Dewsbury.

They also led by six points with 15 minutes to go, and were unlucky not to seal a last-gasp win when scrum half Paul Mennell was only inches off target with a drop goal attempt.

Mennell had put Huddersfield ahead after eight minutes, adding the conversion.

Widnes hit back with two touchdowns, one goaled.

But Mennell's second try after 22 minutes, when he pounced after his own grubber kick hit a post, sparked a bright spell.

Mennell added the goal for a 12-10 lead, which became 24-10 by the break after full-back Leroy Cudoe crossed twice, the second coming from another Mennell grubber kick.

Stand-off Danny Garside improved the first and Mennell the second.

Widnes hit back in the first phase of the second half.

Two converted tries in the space of four minutes brought them back to within two points.

It was nip and tick after that, with loose-forward Simon George and winger Symon Sutherland scoring Giants tries.

Mennell goaled the first but, crucially, was unable to hit the target after the second, which allowed Widnes to level with a converted try on 77 minutes.

Huddersfield's next game is against Hull at Laund Hill on Saturday week (2.30).
